I haven't worked really in a year and a half. I have no reason to watch the clock very much - except for doctor appointments. I never look at a calendar. I have to think to figure out what day of the week it is - and am often wrong.
I completely lose track of time.
I was talking to a friend yesterday and she said that her problem she couldn't remember anything. I never can remember anything either but I find losing time is more important. Priorities I guess.
This also causes me to forget to blog.
Maybe I should try wearing a watch again. But I can't because of lymphedema and RA.

I Was Thinking
I'm sorry, I know I shouldn't spend time thinking because it can cause all sorts of problems. I know. I should stop spending so much time thinking. I'll think about that for a while.
Anyway, I was thinking because I read an article on the giant Rheumatoid Arthritis Time Suck. When you have RA you spend a lot of time going to the doctor to deal with doctors for RA and then all the time dealing with the side effects of your RA medications. And your low immune system which makes you high risk for everything. And blood tests every 8 weeks. And more and more.
But then I get to add in the fibromyalgia time suck which causes time wasted for pain, resting after exertion, and going to doctors. And the post breast cancer required follow ups with doctor appointments, and trying to avoid lymphedema issues - which can cause all sorts of delays in itself. And the post thyroid cancer doctor appointments, blood work, ultrasounds and more. And for every ailment I can add more time sucks.
Basically if you have an ailment, it also has your schedule. You need to go to the doctor for it. You spend more time doing things if you have any impairments because you move slower. You spend time chasing down prescriptions, dealing with insurance companies, waiting at the blood lab, doctor offices, and for tests (and their results).
Being sick has a huge time suck to go with it. Just think, if you get the flu, you spend a lot of time in bed. But then it goes away and you go back to normal. And the time suck goes away. My time sucks never go away. So I get to waste time (thinking and) in the giant time suck of being sick.
Every ailment comes with a time suck.

Where does time go?
I still think its maybe early May. I had a break coming from my doctor appointments, its spring, lots of time to plan vacations, and more.
Where does time go? Its mid June which means we are almost halfway through the year. How did that happen? The last few weeks have been a blur. I was not productive last week because (a) I needed a break, and (b) we had guests. All I did was have fun. I ignored pending doctor appointments, volunteer work, and the rewrite of my disability application.
Earlier this week I had doctor appointments (so far I am fine). I rewrote my disability application with some help (which the lawyer actually thought was good). I worked on my volunteer work but got stuck. I did make some vacation plans for us in early August. I also need a lot of rest after the past week.
Now its Friday (but feels like it should be Wednesday) and I have lots of work to do. I have friends coming over in a few hours. I am not sure I will be done in time.
I think I need to go back and dream about early May.

My time span
These days, every day I have an expiration time. This means at no point past that point in time should I attempt to do anything more than knit, read, or watch TV. This time frame means that every day I need to plan out my day and not spend more time than I should at any point. Every week I sit down and plan out my little time periods so I can get through my days and what I need to get done..
Today my day is planned. Being lazy until 10 am when we will go get the last necessary items for Christmas dinner, make two pies, precook the squash, sort out dishes to use tomorrow, and take a nap while my husband sets the table and cleans up the kitchen.
Tomorrow is Christmas and guests are expected at 2pm to eat at 3pm. I have to put a ham and scalloped potatoes in the oven around 115 and then pick up relatives. We will make the green salad ahead and cook the green beans and heat squash at the last minute. After everyone leaves, which I assume will be by 8pm, I can go to bed early after we run the dishwasher.
Don't I lead an exciting life? This is life with RA and fibromyalgia. For more thoughts on what life with RA go read this.
Since my diagnosis just over two years ago, my days are shorter and shorter but I hope to make them better and better but doing what I want to and not the stuff I don't want.

The worst day of the year
Today is the worst day of the year for Americans. We are all going to be wandering around sleep deprived. Watch out and stock up on coffee.
I heard yesterday on the radio (which is much more reliable than the internet) that it takes about a week for a human's internal clock to adjust to this hour ahead business. Monday is the worst day for accidents nationally as there are many sleep deprived drivers out there. Productivity will be down as well.
I have always hated the time change weeks. I just never get enough sleep for a week. It makes me whiny or even cranky. Crabby too!
To top it off, I am looking a weather map which shows more than a foot of snow for the middle of this week. If we had to spring forward, where the hell is spring damn it!?
Oh dear, crankiness may be showing already. Oopsie.

Starting my big break
I am about to leave for my last doctor appointment for, drum roll please.... SIX WEEKS! I have not had a break like this in years. You may think I am kidding but I am not. I have to go back to like February/March of 2007 since a break like this.
I resolve to stay healthy and not need any medical care until October.
And I only have five more appointments scheduled for the balance of 2013. Plus at least two more set of blood work. I wonder what miracle caused that? Maybe I am getting healthier.
I will also add that my back is significantly better than it was after the trigger point injections.
No time for a big blog post today because I am late!

Over committed again
I am over committed again these days. Combined with a lot of back pain, it is not a lot of fun. We spent the weekend away (without a cell phone and survived) but that cut in to my work time.
I am working my one job, winding down my other job but do not have enough time to get everything finished and I have deadlines. I am also starting to do a little more volunteer work, and tomorrow is an annual event where I have to be there at 6 am - but its only ten minutes from home. I usually stay the whole day but this year they are going to be lucky to have me until lunch. Between back pain and other things I need to do, I am a little short on time and abilities.
Yesterday afternoon I spent was in a good deal of pain even though I took my pills. Silly me, I thought I could go for a walk after working for six hours.
Let's see how I do today. I bet I'll be on my way home by noon.

A Lull in the Action
Yes I am enjoying a lull in the action. The action of doctor appointments that is.
I have one (yes, one, singular, 1) doctor appointment in the entire month of March. I have one (again, one, 1, solo) doctor appointment in the entire month of April. And both of those are appointments with my therapist so the odds of my needing to change into one of those little gowns are extremely slim (and they make such a fashion statement).
What shall I do with my time? I mean besides keep up with my blog. I'll have so much free time!
Daily naps would be a good option. I can use that since I get so tired these days. More exercise Doubtful because I need a a day of rest between exercise. More time paying attention to the cat. I can unless he is sleeping. He's old and needs his 22 hours of naps per day. Quality time with my husband.
Maybe in my absence the hospital will renovate the ladies room in the lobby. It does need a bit of updating - probably because it is the most used room in the building.
But in the month of May, sadly, I have one of 'those' days where I have test, test, doctor appointment. I will blissfully ignore it between now and then. Ignorance is bliss in this case. Its also a case of avoidance.

What to do with all my time?
I have finally reached a point in my 'new normal' life after cancer number two where I seem to have gaps in my schedule. I was trying to pin point what happened and I decided it must be because I have been going to the doctor less and currently have no ailment which requires PT. In January, I had one appointment at the beginning of the month and then another at the very end of the month. In February I had a couple of medical adventures and then a week with three or four. Through some schedule juggling, I had two appointments last week and don't have another until the end of the month. I think I have two on my calendar for April. In May I have two days with medical adventures planned.
Combine this with a slackening in my work schedule for one job where now I only need to go there two days a week instead of the three I had been going in for the last six months, I have gaps in my schedule. What about the rest of my time? Maybe I need to start having a life again. I could work more, um, doubtful. House cleaning - um, no. I could work on my knitting more. I could garden and go for walks more when the weather warms up. Yesterday I worked from home, went for a walk with a friend (where we ran into two adult coyotes in a local park), and had time to attempt to make homemade pasta. (Note to self: next time make sure you have enough flour before starting so you don't have to substitute coarse ground whole wheat.)
Today I get to go to the gym, work from home, and go to a seminar this afternoon. Then I might even be able to work in the garden and clean dead winter stuff out for a bit.
I haven't had this much time on my hands in years. Before cancer number two, I was working full time and didn't have as much time. Now I work 30 hours/week and, with fewer doctor appointments, I have time to do the things I enjoy with out running from one thing to the next.
(And the advice I received on what to do when you see a coyote - stop, look at the camera, say 'beep, beep!' and dash off.)

Tempus fugit
Or time flies. (I had to look up the Latin part to make sure I got it right.) Some how we are approaching the end of 2012 and I have no idea how we got here. I remember partying like it was 1999 in the 1980s. I remember buying my first new-new car (as opposed to new-to-me) in 1989. When we were children half an hour until dinner was an eternity (but half an hour until bedtime was far too short).
All I know now is that I never seem to have enough time to do all the things that I want. Time goes much faster now. I have decided that is a fact. It has sped up. Something has happened along with global warming that has made temperatures go up and time go faster.
This week I am looking at my calendar trying to figure out how I am going to get everything done that I want to and I am not sure how it is going to happen unless I give up eating and sleeping or something.
And I don't even have a single doctor appointment and my schedule is still full. How I even have a week without doctor appointments is beyond me anyway. Last week I had four doctors and one x-ray. This week I have none. Next week I have one doctor and one back procedure. The week after I have one doctor and one back procedure. Then maybe another week off for the holidays.
But I digress. Time is going too fast. Some physicist must have figured out how to alter time and made it move faster. I am sure you agree.

Time
The word of the day is 'time', or perhaps it should be 'sleep' or lack of it. This business of changing time twice a year is perplexing. I mean what is the point? All it does for us is mess up our sleep schedules for a few days. I did some research and found out a bunch of details on it:
The whole point of daylight savings time is to maximize the amount of sunlight later in the day and lessen the amount in the morning. It was the rocket scientist idea (did they have rocket scientists them or were politicians just as smart then as they are now) when Congress approved the time zones that the train schedules had been following since the 1880's. Who knew mass transit would force time zones? It is optional now and was only mandatory in 1918 and during WWII - as it is supposed to save power. In 1966 it was introduced nationally but not everyone follows it. It was moved to its current 'optional' schedule in 2005 to save more electricity. But there has since been a study that says it only saves 1% at most. That shows what a smart idea it really was.
Gee that's a lot of interesting factoids but it does not help cope with reality. Since last night was 'fall back' I am supposed to be more rested today as I got an extra hour of sleep. But I slept really badly last night and am up early thanks to the (damn) cat who wants breakfast according to his stomach, not according to the clock. And have you ever tried to train a cat? Today I am not more rested which I can only assume is due to (ever-so) slightly overdoing things yesterday. Tomorrow I will move into crabby.
Tonight my body will say 'stay up until the old bedtime' which means instead of going to bed at 930 or so (I am an early bird) I will want to go to bed at 830 which is the bedtime for 8 year olds. This means I will force myself to stay up later than my body wants. Tomorrow morning I should get up at 530, according to yesterday's time, but that means I will wake up before the alarm. This will cause lack of sleep and I will end up being crabby - too bad I have to go to work all day tomorrow.
Small children and pets do not understand this business of time change. Explain that to any two year old who's nap and bed time are an hour later than they think they shall be. The two year olds turn into space aliens. The pets become annoying.
I will go spend my day looking at clocks and timers and try to figure out if they are on old time or new time. It used to be you had to reset everything, but now with atomic clocks, the internet, and DVRs which display the time, some things automatically reset themselves. And if your spouse goes around changing the time on some things and you do as well, do you actually end with clocks in the old time, the new time, and the 'turned back twice' time? Its as if you were living in three time zones.
I'm not really sure if we are on daylight saving's time or standard time. I never remember which is which. I just know I will be tired, crabby from lack of sleep, and not really sure what time it is for the next few days.

If you are reading this, its too late.
The best way to deal with changing the daylight savings time thingy is to stay in bed so if you a reading this its too late for you. Well, in our house, we need to explain to the cat about things like weekends and time changes etc. He thinks the world revolves around him and his biological needs for things like food, water, and attention (and don't step in his gift he left on the hall carpet outside the bedroom door) so at 430 am (old time) he began his morning wake-up-the-humans routine.
I don't even know if we are on day light savings time or regular (standard) time. All I know is I will be sleep deprived for a few days and will wonder which clocks and watches I reset. Except the basement clock I never reset - its just wrong half the time. I can handle international time changes of 5 hours or 14 hours no problem but one hour drives me crazy for days. But travel to a place with a one hour time change I can handle as well.
I don't really understand why we have to change time. Its something to do with saving energy and enjoying the evening natural light. I did learn that Ben Franklin came up with the idea but it took over 100 years to catch on. If its to enjoy the evening daylight, it doesn't work here in eastern New England where I think we should really be in Atlantic time if we were really technical about it.
Enough about that. Stay in bed. Sleep late. You'll feel better.
