I have to learn that standing up for myself again.... I have to do better with that word 'no' again. There is only so much of me - not the flabby part (I have plenty of that) - my physical abilities are what is limited. I have to be careful on what I do and how much I do.
For example, I am slowly learning not to be the perfect hostess who jumps up to help anyone who asks a question while in our house. I just can't. If I jump up for every request, I won't have any energy left. If its a good friend who wants a corkscrew, I am happy to say it is in the top drawer of the side board... If its not that close a friend, I am happy to hand them the corkscrew and let them open their own wine.
I am also learning to use the word 'no' again. If someone wants me to go some place, I need a good reason to go with them. Basically, do I really want to go. For example, if someone wants to go shopping for one of the following items, I will be happy to go, for a short while: used clothing, yarn, or plants. If its for something else, I need a good reason to go with them. I have to decide basically if its worth the effort on my part. Its amazing how something little, like out to lunch, can take a lot out of me.
My best remedy for doing to much is lying in bed. This morning I finally got out of bed at 1145AM. I did go to bed around 945PM. So that's only 14 hours of rest. We did have a few friends over for dinner last night and I probably spent too much time getting ready. But that long lying down made me feel like a new(er) person. Today I have finally made it to my computer at 1pm. I will be lazy the rest of the day as I plan on how I will use the word 'no' this week.
I really have to get better at standing up for myself.

Getting Back On Track
This morning I actually feel rested. Actually I felt pretty rested yesterday morning as well. But my day got hijacked and I ended up spending several hours with my father taking him to a doctor appointment (broken second metatarsal in his left foot at age 88) and then x-rays, back to the doctor, and then home. And then home to our house. I was totally exhausted by the time I got home at 430.
But then I slept for close to 9 hours without waking up. So this morning I will go to the gym, then get my hair cut, and go to the library. Then I will stay home and finish what I never got to yesterday. I need to get back on track.
What works best for me is to go out and do things during the first half of the day and then stay home for the afternoon for the most part. I often need to rest in the afternoon so if I am out all afternoon, I lose that key resting time. This will also allow me to eat regularly.
If I skip lunch I have a tendency to eat a lot of crap just before dinner. Yesterday I didn't get lunch. My father and I kept asking each other if we wanted to get something to eat. We both said we weren't hungry so we never got lunch. Eventually, we decided we just wanted to get out of there and never ate lunch.
So when I got home after dropping off my father, it was 430. I first ate a chocolate chip cookie (which also has cinnamon, clove, oatmeal, and pecans - oatmeal is most important) and then I ate some cheese and crackers. Then, 400+ calories later, I decided I needed to wait until dinner. I should have had an apple or an orange and a big glass of water - you wonder why I struggle with losing weight.
I should be home by noon and can then do what I need to do. I need to be back on my schedule. Rest and food are very important and I need to schedule them in to my life regularly.

Doing Too Much!
Of course I have over-scheduled myself for the next few days weeks. I am going to hate myself.
It all started when we decided to have a party, sort of an open house. Originally we thought we would do it in the middle of January, just after we moved in. Obviously that schedule was pushed back. Finally we bit the bullet and picked this Saturday as the date. (And if you are looking for your invitation, maybe its in your spam filter.) So we have a few things to do this week.
I have to finish painting our bedroom. Its been half painted since the end of March. I put on a coat of primer last week and the first coat of paint this morning. I have to finish before the cleaning lady comes on Wednesday. (We don't want it to look half painted at our party because it is just plain ugly half painted.)
I also have to do laundry (5 loads give or take) and dig up some jerusalem artichokes from a friend tomorrow. Later this week I have two training phone calls for my replacements at work, getting my hair and nails done (I can be such a girl), my knitting group, the grocery store, start preparing food, have the party and then collapse.
But I can't collapse. Sunday I promised myself I would go to the NH Sheep and Wool festival. I am going if it kills me. I just learned about Sheep and Wool festivals from someone in my knitting group. Who knew they happen all over the place every spring. I can't wait. If I have any energy at all I am going.
I know I am doing way too much. I know its not going to easy on me. But we have really looked forward to the party. And I really want to go to the Sheep and Wool festival. These are both important to me. I know its going to be a lot. But I will make sure I get plenty of sleep and rest between all these activities.
Part of being me, I keep doing what is important to me. I am not going to give in to all my ailments and sit around. I also want to enjoy myself.

A busy week
I have a busy week scheduled. Some how, I have four doctor appointments, plus I need to work two days, go to the gym three days, and keep packing to move. Oh, and find a new place to live.
Tomorrow, Sunday, we are having our neighbors over around 9am so they can take a look at our house to see if they want to buy it. I am giving them first dibs because they are nice and I know they have been house hunting for a while. But that means today I have to make the house look semi decent so they can actually look at it tomorrow. Then we are going to four open houses in the afternoon.
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday I have doctor appointments. These are just a major time suck and I need to remember everything I want to ask them all (that means I need to start write them my questions down). And I need to get bloodwork done.
I think I am going to work Monday after my first appointment and then another day later in the week, maybe Thursday.
Oh, and did I say my back is giving me lots of pain these days? That could make me whiney.....

Over Doing Things
Have you seen the ad on TV for some fibromyalgia drug that shows a woman standing in her kitchen with an overflowing sink of dirty dishes? She says she doesn't have the energy to take care of everything because of the pain and fatigue caused by fibro. And then she started taking this amazing medication and is able to again (followed by a million potential side effects).
That is sort of me. I mean I have fibromyalgia and the fatigue and insomnia that go along with it. And I am on one of the drugs with the fancy ad campaigns. But I deal more and more with the fatigue and insomnia and pain. And I am on additional medications to take care of the side effects.
And then what do I do? I keep on volunteering to help other organizations. I guess I have a problem saying no. And then I have no time to relax and take care of the fatigue and pain for a bit. So I end up overdoing things and am totally fatigued to a point where I feel like I am too tired to sleep.
But now I have to work on the word no. My health has made it apparent that I can't keep volunteering and have to learn how to tell people "I'm sorry but I am not able to help you as I previously thought".
But to be perfectly honest, I am really sick of my body preventing me from doing the things that I want to do. Its a huge frustration for me. I want to continue to do things and my body keeps letting me down. If I had my way I would never had cancer and any of these ailments at all. But since that is not to be, I will suck it up and keep on going. And work on that word 'no'.

The schedule juggle
Let me preface this all by saying I work part time with complete flexibility in my schedule and I can come and go as I please.
All I was trying to do yesterday was to schedule three fifteen minute appointments for a medical massage for my sore hamstring. The goal was one yesterday, one on Thursday, and one next Monday. The result was one yesterday, one tomorrow (Wednesday) and one October 12. To be fair, I will be out of town for a few days which complicates the matter. And the tech who does the massages only works Monday through Thursday.
I couldn't go Thursday because I already have to work and have two appointments in the afternoon. Tomorrow worked but I had to reschedule a different appointment and move it to today so I could fit it in. Next week the only times he had were ones when I wasn't available.
That is just this week. My schedule is not what we call empty and relaxing with a part time work schedule. I am always running around some place. Today is work, farmer's market, Dr appointment, and hair cut. I will leave at 730 am and return around 530.
Then sometimes when I am having a 'bad spell' (doesn't that sound antiquated or something), I just ditch everything and hibernate. That is what I did on Sunday. After our party Saturday, I woke up with bags under my eyes....
My body doesn't tolerate the schedule juggle and ensuing long, full days, any better than my calendar does. And every little change is complicated for both.

Not enough rest
The combination of all my ailments requires me to make the most of downtime and get enough rest. When I don't the fatigue just piles up and I end up collapsing for a few hours. I try to schedule myself with enough rest breaks built into my week so that I can stay on top of what my body needs.
I focus my life on working part time, going to the gym three days a week and fitting in all my damn doctor appointments. This gives me two afternoons in the week where I can do nothing.
If I have a few hours of doing nothing - meaning sitting around and watching tv, knitting, reading, surfing the internet, or whatever that does not require me to run up and down stairs, leave the house or anything expelling more than the smallest amount of energy. This includes avoiding house cleaning, cooking (because that requires standing), etc. Also going out of the house requires walking places which can be too much.
However sometimes my schedule is overridden by other needs. Friday was an example. I got up early to go to the gym, then grocery shopping for myself and my parents, lunch with a friend and then home for the afternoon where I could relax.
When I got home from the grocery store, I decided to cook a chicken in the crock pot for the first time. I looked it up online and found that I should cook a 3-4 pound chicken for 3-4 hours on high. I had a 6 lb chicken and it was 11 am. (Why am I blogging about cooking chicken?). I didn't want to wait to start it until I got home around 2 because I wasn't sure I had enough time. I put the chicken in on high and figured it would be okay because I would only be gone for a couple hours. Famous last words.
I met a friend for lunch where I am helping with the New England Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (www.neccs.org) annual awards luncheon on March 29. (Tickets are $50 and its a worthy cause.) Then I remembered I forgot to pick up a prescription for my husband. Then I ran into an estate sale. Then I got a phone call from a family member who needed to go to the Emergency Room at the hospital. Let me add I had no way to contact my husband because he did not have a phone or access to email at work that day. And the damn chicken kept on cooking.
I got home at 630 pm. I was completely exhausted. My back was hurting and I hadn't had pain meds with me. I had a minor temper tantrum about the damn chicken (which was cooked to perfection) because I was so tired. I got in bed in tears because I was so tired. I was too tired. I ate dinner in bed but got up to watch a little TV with my husband and then slept for 12 hours.Yesterday I ran out of steam by about 2pm. Too bad we didn't get home until about 430.
Today I am meeting a friend who I haven't seen in MONTHS, visiting sick family members, and coming home to rest for the afternoon. I really need to spend the afternoon in bed resting. I am concerned that my schedule this week will not allow enough rest. Which may lead to other temper tantrums. But I won't cook another chicken in the crock pot right away.
I do not think people understand that I need more rest than the average person. I actually do not really give a rat's ass what others think about this because I do not have the patience for it these days.

Over committed again
I am over committed again these days. Combined with a lot of back pain, it is not a lot of fun. We spent the weekend away (without a cell phone and survived) but that cut in to my work time.
I am working my one job, winding down my other job but do not have enough time to get everything finished and I have deadlines. I am also starting to do a little more volunteer work, and tomorrow is an annual event where I have to be there at 6 am - but its only ten minutes from home. I usually stay the whole day but this year they are going to be lucky to have me until lunch. Between back pain and other things I need to do, I am a little short on time and abilities.
Yesterday afternoon I spent was in a good deal of pain even though I took my pills. Silly me, I thought I could go for a walk after working for six hours.
Let's see how I do today. I bet I'll be on my way home by noon.

Tempus fugit
Or time flies. (I had to look up the Latin part to make sure I got it right.) Some how we are approaching the end of 2012 and I have no idea how we got here. I remember partying like it was 1999 in the 1980s. I remember buying my first new-new car (as opposed to new-to-me) in 1989. When we were children half an hour until dinner was an eternity (but half an hour until bedtime was far too short).
All I know now is that I never seem to have enough time to do all the things that I want. Time goes much faster now. I have decided that is a fact. It has sped up. Something has happened along with global warming that has made temperatures go up and time go faster.
This week I am looking at my calendar trying to figure out how I am going to get everything done that I want to and I am not sure how it is going to happen unless I give up eating and sleeping or something.
And I don't even have a single doctor appointment and my schedule is still full. How I even have a week without doctor appointments is beyond me anyway. Last week I had four doctors and one x-ray. This week I have none. Next week I have one doctor and one back procedure. The week after I have one doctor and one back procedure. Then maybe another week off for the holidays.
But I digress. Time is going too fast. Some physicist must have figured out how to alter time and made it move faster. I am sure you agree.

Dont believe everything you read
Today is the day which has been predicted by some (little religious cult/Christian radio station who wanted to make headlines and blamed it on the bible) that the world would come to an end. Or maybe it won't. I'm voting for it not happening and I've got the Huffington Post on my side to prove it. I mean if the world was going to end:
- Why do we have milk that won't expire until tomorrow?
- Sarah Palin isn't president
- and the Mayans never said so
Go read the rest for some humor to start your day. A big case for not believing what you read.
Other things not to believe on the internet:
- Medical advice for any site which is selling a product to cure you.
- Medical details from non-medical professionals. Someone's blog (even mine), Facebook page, tweet, etc tell about their version of the medical adventure but that is only what happened to them. You are different. It may not work for you.
Anyway, I am cynical and tired this morning. I have a LOT to do this weekend - work related. My toe hurts. I went to a church dinner last night and ate some yummy home made food, aside from feeling fat as a result, my back hurts from sitting in a folding church. My antibiotics are playing games with my stomach and digestive system - I hate that. Oh, I am overscheduled. Is that news?
Today I have a non profit event this morning and am bringing almost everything for it. Afterwards I need to go to the office and drop off everything and get the materials ready for the next event next week end that I can't attend. Then I need to put in the final edits for a newsletter and produce it, put it up on the website and into electronic format to be distributed. I also need to get an updated copy of our database uploaded. Finally I have some paperwork to finish up. After all that I will go to the gym, the farm stand for vegetables and some annuals, and it will probably be dinner time.
That part is true. That is my day and its supposed to be a weekend where I can rest.

I'm cranky
I'm cranky this week. I have a lot going on and am feeling stressed. This is what is making me cranky:
- Blogger was down for most of two days. I find this one of the most epic cases of mismanagement. Yes it is a free service we use to host our blogs but it is part of Google's money making tools (where they are trying to take over the world) but they just severely shot themselves in the foot. Apparently there were some upgrades and maintenance issues and things went wrong and the Blogger service was done for parts of Thursday and most of Friday with no real updates or explanation. I am ready to move my blog to a provider which actually runs parallel servers to ensure these issues don't happen. Its not the problems with service but the lack of communication through the issues. Just imagine if the Google search engine was down for the same amount of time. Anyway, I couldn't blog yesterday and I always blog (unless I am in a part of the world without internet) and it upset my routine and made me cranky.
- On Wednesday I posted about my wonderful series of doctor appointments and how much fun I had with them on Tuesday (but you couldn't read it because Blogger was down). They were so much fun and then my doctor called me Wednesday night and I couldn't get hold of her to call back until Thursday morning. When doctors call you at home at night it is always stressful. Apparently my blood tests, EKG, and chest x-ray were normal (or as normal as I can be) but my PCP spoke with my endocrinologist and they want me to slightly adjust my thyroid hormone levels down to see if it impacts my heart rate and then have more blood work in six weeks. But if my thyroid level gets lower, its harder to lose weight or not gain weight and one of the things which stresses your heart is your weight. I also have an Echo cardiogram in a few weeks to see if this tells us any more information. So I am still in 'wait and see' for longer.
- I am not looking forward to a series of shots under my knee cap. I was stupid and looked up what they do and then someone else told me how painful they were for her husband.
- I am overscheduled. I have entirely too much to do in the next few weeks. I have personal stuff to do. I have volunteer work. I have doctor appointments. I have a lot of work to do. I have meetings. I have events for work. And it all has to be done in the next ten days.
- I have knee pain, back pain, SI joint pain and don't feel like sucking it up and coping so I am whining.
- I am not getting enough sleep. I wake up at night and have a very difficult time getting back to sleep. And last night just as I did get back to sleep the (stupid) cat knocked over my water glass all over the floor. He went back to sleep. I cleaned up the mess.

Its nice to knowI'm not the only one
Recently I have written (or blabbed or bored you) about clinical trials and the drug approval process and how (un)happy I am with it at times where they approve drugs and then withdraw them. Well, it turns out, I am not the only one. There was an article this morning where a doctor at Children's Hospital in Boston discusses possible flaws in the drug approval process. But she also has some plausible solutions for changing the process - and says we aren't there yet. So I'll go on with my fingers crossed that nothing I take will be recalled.
But its Monday morning and I have my forgotten radiation oncologist follow up first thing. Somehow I will be incredibly busy in the next two weeks. Why do I do these things to myself? I have four doctor appointments, two meetings, two big work deadlines, and have to go to work as well. When am I supposed to have fun?
